La idea de liminalidad es definida, según los folkloristas Arnold van Gennep y Victor Turner, como “el momento intermedio de un ritual, caracterizado por una sensación de ambigüedad y desorientación, donde el sujeto transita un proceso de reestructuración en el cual sus nociones de identidad, tiempo y comunidad quedan disueltas en anticipación al estado posterior. Se trata, por consiguiente, del momento donde las distintividades triviales quedan suspendidas, lo que precisamente permite “el paso” entre una condición social y otra.”
liminal(mente) es una pieza sonora y performance dividido en dos momentos: En el primero se capturó el paisaje sonoro de la garita de San Ysidro de la región metropolitana Tijuana-San Diego por medio de grabaciones de campo estratégicas. Posteriormente se utilizó una interface cerebro-computadora (EEG) durante el ritual de cruce fronterizo automovilístico para crear una intervención en de dichas grabaciones de campo con el objetivo de postular la pregunta: ¿Cuál es el sonido interno (individual) y externo (colectivo) del momento de espera entre los contexto socioculturales de México y Estados Unidos?
La experiencia de cruce de frontera es el epítome de la experiencia liminal a nivel individual y colectivo, en donde un sector de la población en MX y EUA experimenta un ritual en donde sus nociones y costumbres quedan en redefinición durante el estado de tránsito y espera. Existen incontables anécdotas en donde se describe un cambio en morales y comportamiento social, al igual que una tensión al arribar a la zona de migración correspondiente, es decir pasar “al-otro-lado”: a otro contexto socioeconómico y de condiciones políticas de Estado-Nación. Al exaltar estas diferencias in-situ, liminal(mente) pretende catalizar nuevas posibilidades para replantear mediante una irrupción sonora en una situación cotidiana como lo es el cruce transfronterizo.

The idea of liminality is defined, according to folklorists Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner, as “the intermediate moment in a ritual characterized by a sensation of ambiguity and disorientation, where the subject transitions from a process of restructuring in which their notions of identity, time and community are dissolved in anticipation of the following state of being. It’s then the moment where trivialities are suspended, which allows the step between one social condition and the other.”
liminal(mente) is a piece and performance divided in two moments: The first component is a capturing of the soundscape of the San Ysidro Border Crossing in the Tijuana-San Diego region through strategic field recordings. Later, a brain-computer interface (EEG) was used during the ritual of border crossing to create a generative composition made up of said recordings with the objective of posing the question: What is the internal sound (the individual) and the external sound (collective) in waiting between the sociocultural contexts of Mexico and the United States? The result of this performance was recorded and later transmitted through the temporary pirate radio station of Cognate collective.
The experience of crossing the border is the epitome of the liminal experience, in which a sector of the population of México and the USA experience a ritual in which its notions and customs are in redefinition during that period of transit. There are uncountable amount of anecdotes in which there is a description of a switch in morals and social behaviors when a person crosses to “the other side” due to the socioeconomics and policies of each Nation-State. By highlighting these differences, liminal(mente) proposes to catalyze new possibilities of thinking stemming from a sonic disruption to a common situation as is the border crossing.
